The first South Africa Selection by CMB kicks off in Cape Town
The inaugural edition of the South Africa Selection by CMB has just begun in Cape Town. Over the next two days, 15 local and international expert judges will taste the 215 wines and spirits presented for this first competition.
The first blind tastings began this morning, with journalists and buyers from retailers in Norway, Denmark, Switzerland, Mexico, Netherlands, South Africa and Great Britain being able to sample a panorama of local wine and spirits.
Following the success of the Sauvignon Selection by CMB in March 2023 – then known as the Concours Mondial du Sauvignon – the decision was made early in 2024 to establish a national competition in South Africa under the global auspices of the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles.
Quentin Havaux, CMB’s CEO, explains, “Our vision for the South Africa Selection is threefold:
- to develop a national wine and spirits competition powered by the well-recognized Concours Mondial de Bruxelles;
- to create synergy in South Africa that will promote the country’s wines and spirits to local consumers;
- and finally, to create new platforms for the promotion of South African wines and spirits in world markets.”
The Competition Director is Lorraine Immelman, a well-known figure in South African wine and spirits circles with extensive experience in the field.
“I’m incredibly excited about this first edition of the South Africa Selection by CMB. This is just the beginning, and I’m confident it will pave the way for many more editions, showcasing the quality and diversity of our wines and spirits on both national and international stages,” she says.
The results will be announced on 26th September on www.southafricalselection.com

About Concours Mondial de Bruxelles
The Concours Mondial de Bruxelles is one of the most significant international events of its kind.
Over 10 000 wines and spirits from around the world are entered each year by producers to be judged by a panel of experts.
Our judges taste these wines and spirits with one guiding principle: to single out wines of irreproachable quality, with no bias stemming from the label or an appellation’s prestige, and then to assist and guide the producer in developing and supporting new markets for their awarded products.
